Positive - Negative

Here is an example, I hope that a corrected or confirmed.
[latex] \ begin {pmatrix} a & 2 &-a \ \ 2 & 1 & 1 \ \ 1 & 1 & 2 \ end {pmatrix} [/ latex]
parameters a =
Task: they determine the parameters so that the matrix A is positive or negative definite.
positive definite: So if I understand correctly the following must be positive:
1.Determinante: [latex] \ begin {array} a \ end {array} [/ latex]
2.Determinante: [latex] \ begin {array} a & 2 \ \ 2 & 1 \ end {array} [/ latex]
3.Determinante: [latex] \ begin {pmatrix} a & 2 &-a \ \ 2 & 1 & 1 \ \ 1 & 1 & 2 \ end {pmatrix} [/ latex]
My conclusion:
First a
Second a-4
Third a ²-5a +1
From this it follows that a = 4.79
Can it be?
Task, they determine the parameters such that the matrix is negative definite:
Then I would proceed as above, but then all be negative determinants.
